I regret giving Harari a dime for this one. Having read this book, it is clear to me that Harari’s “speciality” in scholarship (i.e., “Big History”) is truly a pseudo-science. The claim that someone can be an expert on the history of the cosmos–past, present, and future–as well as an authority on all things sociological, theological, and astro-physical should trigger warning signs for the reader. Specked with some facts throughout, this book (and most of Harari’s field of study) is truly speculative fiction in the guise of past and futurist historiography. Harari’s obvious axe-to-grind against religion also mars the readability and credibility of his work. Regardless of one’s religious affiliation or lack thereof, Harari’s polemic against religion begins to sound like a three-year-old complaining that he doesn’t like his vegetables. In summary, don’t waste your time and money. Read Max Tegmark instead for a more scientific tour of humanity’s past and possible future.
